Daycare cleaning service: a small building, a clinical expectation and a parent who will notice

A nursery is a small commercial building cleaned to an expectation somewhere between an office and a clinic, and judged by an audience that inspects it daily. Parents see the floor, the changing area and the bathrooms every morning, and they form a view about the whole setting from them. That is unusual: in most commercial buildings the cleaning is invisible when it works, and in a nursery it is part of what is being sold.

Specifying a nursery clean

  1. Separate the changing and toilet areas from everything else. Nappy changing areas, potties and child-height toilets are the highest-frequency, highest-standard part of the building and they are small. Specify them by name with their own frequency, because a whole-building frequency either overcleans the play space or undercleans these.
  2. Name the products, because children put things in their mouths. Toys, soft furnishings and low surfaces are mouthed, so the residue left behind matters as much as the clean. Ask what is used on child-contact surfaces and whether it is rinsed, and make the answer part of the contract rather than the pitch.
  3. Fix the hours around the setting's day. Most nurseries open early and close late, which leaves a narrow window and sometimes none at all. Deciding whether the clean happens after close, before open, or partly during quiet periods with staff present is the decision that sets the price.
  4. Say who cleans up after an accident. Bodily fluid incidents happen daily and cannot wait for the evening. The contract should say whether the setting's staff handle them with the setting's own kit, which is usual, and what the cleaner does at the next visit.

Common questions

Is a nursery priced like an office?
Per square foot it looks more expensive, because the building is small and the standard is high. The published per-square-foot rates in this record are general commercial figures and a small, high-frequency building sits at the top of any such range rather than in the middle of it.
Does the cleaner work while children are present?
Sometimes, in shared areas during quiet periods, and it needs to be an explicit decision with the safeguarding checks that follow from it rather than something that evolves.
Are toys part of the cleaning contract?
Usually not. Toy cleaning is generally the setting's own routine, and if you want it contracted it needs naming, because it is labour-heavy and nobody prices it by accident.
