Covid cleaning services: what was bought in a hurry, and what is worth keeping
A great deal of cleaning was bought between 2020 and 2022 on urgency rather than on evidence, and some of it is still on contracts that nobody has revisited. The question now is not whether a building should be disinfected but which parts of that emergency specification were doing something, which were reassurance, and which are still being paid for monthly by a facility manager who inherited the contract.

Reviewing what is still on the contract
- Find the lines that were added in 2020 and never reviewed. Enhanced touch-point rounds, midday disinfection passes and electrostatic spraying were added to thousands of contracts in a single year. Some are still there, still billed, and still unexamined. Reading the current specification against the pre-2020 one is an hour's work and often the largest single saving available.
- Keep the touch-point round and question the fogging. Frequent cleaning of high-contact surfaces is ordinary good practice and worth keeping. Whole-room fogging and spraying is an event, priced as an event, and it was sold in many places as a recurring line. If it is recurring on your contract, ask what it is for.
- Decide what happens during an outbreak, in advance. The useful thing to retain is not a permanent enhanced clean but an agreed response: a call-off rate, a response time and a defined scope for the day a building has a problem. That costs nothing while nothing is happening, which is the point.
Common questions
- Should we still be paying for covid cleaning?
- Only for the parts that are ordinary good practice, principally touch-point frequency. Anything described as enhanced, emergency or pandemic-related on a contract that has run since 2020 deserves a line-by-line read.
- Is fogging worth buying?
- As a response to a specific event it is a legitimate purchase. As a monthly recurring line in a normal building it is very hard to justify, and it is the line most often left running.
- What does this record publish about it?
- Nothing directly. No company here publishes a disinfection or outbreak rate; what two of them publish is a deep or specialty uplift on the standard per-square-foot figure, which is the shape any honest answer takes.
- Does an enhanced clean need certifying?
- A completion record is useful evidence that a visit happened. It is not evidence that a method worked, and the two get conflated in proposals.
